A used car is the biggest secondhand purchase most people make. A few steps protect you from expensive surprises.

Steps

  1. Set a budget including insurance, registration and repairs
  2. Get a vehicle history report using the VIN
  3. Check open recalls at NHTSA.gov with the VIN
  4. Have an independent mechanic inspect it before you buy
  5. Test drive on different roads
  6. Read the Buyers Guide on dealer cars, which says whether there's a warranty or it's "as is"
